Dick Wellstood

1927 - 1987

Dick Wellstood at the piano
Originally from Connecticut, Dick Wellstood was self-taught in ragtime, Stride Piano and Boogie-Woogie. During his career, he accompanied great names in jazz such as Bob Wilbur, Sidney Bechet, Red Allen and Roy Eldrige. He remains strongly associated with Stride Piano, a style of which he was one of the great specialists after the World War II, alongside Dick Hyman, Ralph Sutton and Don Ewell. With a playing that was sometimes incisive, sometimes nuanced, he had a very personal approach in the interpretation of standards.
